Community Threads: Unmapping/Reweaving
(Spring 2022 – Present) Community Threads: Unmapping/Reweaving is a large scale project that bridges textile arts, community, and archives with a specific focus on mapping.
The artwork created through community collaboration in the form of various workshops with local artists, will represent an intentional break from traditional mapping as an alternative record becoming inclusive of many stories, techniques, and contributors of all ages and backgrounds. The final piece will be installed in the form of a large scale map within the Sault Ste. Marie Museum created by the work done throughout these workshops. This project is generously funded by the Ontario Arts Council – Artists in Communities and Schools Grant Stream. Community Outreach
(Winter 2019 – Present) As part of The ArtSpeaks Project, we offer free-access, community-based art-making groups for adults and youth 16+yrs impacted by trauma. Participants are recognized as inherently expressive, full of potential and encouraged to explore a variety of art-making processes at their own pace.
With the on-set of the pandemic we moved to delivering our Art-Hives via live-streams on social media platforms Instagram (IGTV) & Facebook. ArtSpeaks also facilitates outdoor community events in conjunction with the City of Sault Ste. Marie to engage the public in small to medium groups in creating interactive art projects and local revitalizations. Free art kits and mark-making guides are provided for folks to keep and share on to others. - Clinical -The Mental Health & Addictions Program and Sexual Assault Care Centre at the Sault Area Hospital (SAH) have engaged Maria Parrella-Ilaria, AOCA, BFA, MA to facilitate individual and small group art therapy sessions for SAH staff, leaders and clients.
